SPECIAL WORKSHOP NOTICE: Redevelopment 101 > COPA Workshop Details
(workshop notice posted May 11, 2009)
FCC is active participant in this important interfaith effort to improve our communities. COPA is a network of 35 faith-based and nonprofit institutions in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties with the concept of “relational organizing”—a process of deepening understanding of each other that identifies potential areas for action on behalf of our members. Relational organizing includes one-to-one meetings, house meetings, research actions, and community actions; this can help us (1) identify and serve the needs of the congregation, and (2) prepare us to work together for a better (broader) community.
A report on the House Meeting Campaign
February – March 2009
We held 16 house meetings with over 100 people participating.
We asked the question:
How has this economic crisis affected you or someone to whom you are connected?
What did we learn about our FCC members and friends?
- We want to live more simply.
- We do not want anyone to go through these hard times alone.
- We want to help.
- We have been affected by loss of income, either from losing a job, from a work cut-back or from losses in retirement funds. Our retired members are not as able to be the safety net for their adult children.
- We are experiencing anxiety.
What are we doing? How are we responding?
As an individual / family we are recommitting to reducing our carbon footprint by increasing how we reduce, reuse, and recycle.
As a church community we are
1. making food cards available at our pastor’s discretion (WCO, Milestone money)
2. becoming a ‘green church’ (Greening Committee, Ways of Life)
3. coordinating volunteers for food pantries (Women at the Well, WCO)
As a church involved in COPA we are
1. working to adapt to a changing economy by
• Job training exploration, planning
• Redevelopment Area 101 workshops
2. working to rebuild the public safety net
• working with our county budget with our County Supervisors
3. participating in our COPA Core Team
• 1st Sunday of the month, 6 – 8 p.m. FCC Library.
Our next COPA Core Team meeting is June 7 at 6pm at First Congregational Church
