A letter from Dave Grishaw-Jones regarding the Day of Decision
Dear Friends,
As we begin to sift through today’s decision, I want to remind you – though it’s perhaps not necessary – that your relationships and marriages are honored and cherished at First Congregational Church. Whether or not you married legally last year. Whether or not you want to be married in the future. Your relationships are such a blessing to us at FCC (and to the wider community as well). We would not be the same without them. We would not be the same without you
Listening to NPR just now, I heard yet another Christian blowhard trumpeting this decision as God’s will. With sneering pride, he talked about the great justice down for ‘families’ and the great state of California.
You know, and I know, that California will be a ‘great state’ when and only when we are all protected EQUALLY under the law. In the meantime, our church, FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH will continue to be a community where EXTRAVAGANT WELCOME, deep respect and mutual understanding guide our life and choices. I will continue to celebrate marriages (and bless them with the church’s blessing, and mine, and ours) of all kinds. Together, we’ll continue to support couples in every way possible. We will be a sign of the justice that is coming, a sign of the beloved community promised by God.
Call on me if you need me, for support, care, counsel. You name it. I want to be an ally. I want to be in this fight for justice with you.
Peace, grace, courage,
Dave Grishaw-Jones
