ASH WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2010 THROUGH EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 4, 2010
|
During Lent, the church traces Jesus’ steps to Jerusalem, the cross and beyond. It’s a powerful time of identification, reflection and discernment. We hope you’ll choose to take this season to heart and take advantage of the amazing opportunities at FCC.
LENTEN PRAYER
Renew your commitment to prayer and benefit from the companionship and wisdom of FCC friends during the Lenten Season.
Passage Meditation: Tuesday Evenings @ 7
In the Sanctuary
Forest Monsen invites seekers and friends to join him for this group each Tuesday evening. The group focuses on a particular style of meditation taught by Eknath Easwaran and embraced by Christians and friends in other traditions. Contact Forest for more information at 469-3095. And check out Easwaran’s webpage at
ww.easwaran.org/page/96.
Centering Prayer: Tuesday & Friday Mornings @ 8:20
In the Library
Twice a week, Dave Grishaw-Jones invites FCC friends to join him for centering prayer and silence in the Library. We gather at 8:20, share a brief reading, and sit together in holy silence for 25 minutes. We’re finished by 8:50. All are welcome, and this is
definitely a drop-in kind of group!
LENTEN CLASSES
Parables of Liberation: Face to Face with Grace
Three Offerings During Lent
1. Sunday Mornings @ 9 in the Lounge (beg. 2/21)
2. Wednesday Evenings @ 7 in Room 5 (beg. 3/3)
3. Thursday Afternoons @ 12:30 in the Library (beg. 2/18)
Jesus’ parables offer some of the Bible’s most challenging material. They insist on engagement and defy distanced analysis. Through these stories, Jesus urges us to examine our deeply held assumptions about faith, morality, grace; then, he takes us on a ride. Into new territory. A place where decisions are made, commitments determined.
Think about them: The Good Samaritan and his evangelical courage. The Prodigal Son and his father’s extravagant welcome. Stories like these are easy to take for granted – but we’re so much the wiser when we don’t.
This Lent, our Christian Growth Team offers “Parables of Liberation” at three different times – hoping that these make it possible for you to make study a part of your Lenten journey. We’ll look at the historical and literary settings of the parables; but, more importantly, we’ll ask what they have to say to our lives and our faith as progressive Christians.
For more information, speak with Curt Simmons (who will facilitate the Wednesday evening sessions) or Dave Grishaw-Jones (who will host the Sunday and Thursday sessions).
LENTEN TAIZÉ
Our intimate Taizé service meets weekly during Lent – on Fridays, beginning at 8 in the hall.
Based on a style developed at the Taizé ecumenical community in France, our own service offers intimacy and mystery in prayer and song. Services last for an hour…a wonderful and soulful way to end the workweek.
If your inner mystic needs some attention this Lent, spend Friday evenings with us!
