GAY PRIDE & LGBT WELCOME

Pride!

First Congregational Church is committed to overcoming bigotry and prejudice--not only in the world beyond our doors, but in the Christian tradition itself.  Since 1997, we've been an enthusiastically "OPEN & AFFIRMING" congregation of the United Church of Christ, joining hundreds of churches across the country in a movement that celebrates the membership and ministry of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender friends.  We're all on a journey--a human journey of discovery and growth.  FCC's a place where we join that journey together: from all walks of life, from many points of view.

LGBT Community, Friendship & Solidarity: FCC has a large, lively and diverse community of LGBT friends and allies.  We find spirit and faith together, gather for all kinds of fun and fellowship, and work together on projects that make a difference.

Weddings, Unions & Marriage Equality: For years now, FCC has taken a very public stand in favor of marriage equality.  In 2004, a hugelove county-wide celebration recognized over 40 gay and lesbian couples (from many faith traditions) whose marriages we honor and bless wholeheartedly.  Both of our ordained ministers (Dave Grishaw-Jones and Cordelia Strandskov) joyfully officiate at all kinds of weddings.  You can reach them for more information at the church office.  And Brooke Graff, our parish administrator, happily helps couples arrange for the use of our sanctuary and fellowship hall for weddings and receptions.  Love is, after all, Jesus' only way.

Santa Cruz Pride!: For ten years now, FCC has marched--en masse--in the annual Gay Pride Parade through downtown Santa Cruz.  This past year, 2011, our delegation was the parade's largest! We want the wider community to see us, to know us and to hear our witness to the liberating message of Jesus.  In Christ there is no east or west, no north or south; we are all one in that amazing love!

Teaching and Spiritual Growth: We appreciate the importance of spiritual study, growth and humility.  cordelia at prideThere's always so much more to learn about God's inclusive love and the profound grace of Jesus' teaching.  Through classes, Sunday worship and other events, we come together for deep exploration, prayer, study and lively conversation.  Recently, the Rev. Cordelia Strandskov preached a Sunday sermon called Being Gay is a Gift from God.  It's a fine example of our theological outlook and commitment to an expanding circle of grace.

OCCUPY JESUS!

JESUS, POVERTY & EMPIRE
How did Jesus speak to economic injustice?  What kinds of action did he take in the face of inequality and social unrest?  Join us for a dynamic two-day seminar with Ched Myers and Elaine Enns as we explore economic crisis and the practice of Jesus.
